Common Dental Problems Composite Bonding can Fix

Composite bonding suits people who want noticeable improvement without invasive treatment. Unlike veneers, there’s usually no drilling or removal of healthy tooth structure. Unlike teeth whitening, bonding can fix shape, length, and alignment issues in the same appointment. The treatment works particularly well if you have:

What happens during composite bonding treatment?

Composite bonding is straightforward and usually completed in a single visit. Here’s what to expect when you come to Pearly Whites for treatment.

Step 1: Consultation and smile design

We start by listening. What bothers you about your smile? Dr. Lia will examine your teeth, take photos if helpful, and explain honestly whether bonding is the right solution. We'll discuss shade, shape, and the overall look you're aiming for.

Step 2: Preparation

We gently roughen the tooth surface to help the composite stick properly, then apply a bonding agent. No drilling needed in most cases. Local anaesthetic is available if you're having several teeth bonded, but many patients don't need it.

Step 3: Building and shaping

We apply composite resin in layers, sculpting each tooth by hand to create the right shape and contour. A special light hardens each layer. This continues until we've built up the tooth to the desired shape and blended it seamlessly with your natural teeth

Step 4: Polishing and final adjustments

We polish the bonded teeth to a smooth, natural-looking finish. We check your bite, make any final tweaks, and ensure everything feels comfortable. The entire appointment takes one to two hours depending on how many teeth we're treating.

Step 5: Aftercare guidance

We'll explain how to look after your bonded teeth to keep them looking good for years. The care routine is the same as natural teeth, with a few small adjustments around biting hard foods.

Common Questions About Composite Bonding

How much does composite bonding cost?

Composite bonding at Pearly Whites costs between £180 and £350 per tooth, depending on the complexity of the work and how much reshaping is needed.

If you’re having multiple teeth bonded, we can provide a full quote during your consultation once we’ve assessed exactly what you want to achieve. Some patients bond two front teeth to close a gap. Others treat six or eight teeth across their smile to create a complete transformation.

We offer 0% finance on treatments over £500, allowing you to spread the cost over 6 to 12 months with no interest. For larger smile makeovers, we can arrange longer finance terms at competitive rates through our partner Tabeo.

If you’re not sure whether bonding is right for you, book a consultation first. We charge £65 for a cosmetic consultation, which includes a full assessment, discussion of options, and a written treatment plan with costs. If you go ahead with treatment, we deduct the consultation fee from your final bill.

Both composite bonding and veneers can improve the appearance of your smile, but they work in different ways and suit different situations.

Composite bonding is applied directly to your teeth in the dental chair. It’s minimally invasive, reversible, and completed in one appointment. The results are immediate, and the treatment usually doesn’t require any removal of tooth structure. Bonding works well for minor cosmetic improvements like small chips, gaps, or discolouration.

Composite can stain over time and may need refreshing or replacement every five to ten years. It’s not as strong as porcelain, so it’s better suited to front teeth that aren’t under heavy biting pressure.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made in a dental lab and bonded permanently to the front of your teeth. They’re stronger, more stain-resistant, and typically last 10 to 15 years or longer. Veneers give a highly polished, uniform result and work well for more significant changes to tooth shape, size, or colour.

However, veneers usually require some removal of tooth enamel to make space for the porcelain. This makes the treatment irreversible. You’ll need veneers (or another restoration) on those teeth for life. Veneers also cost more and require at least two appointments, as the veneers are custom-made in a lab.

Composite bonding is as much art as dentistry. The difference between a natural-looking result and something that feels obviously fake comes down to the skill, eye, and patience of the dentist shaping your teeth.

At Pearly Whites, Dr. Lia Melconian has built a reputation for cosmetic work that looks like you, not like a template. She takes time during each bonding appointment to understand your face, your smile, and what feels right to you. Every tooth is shaped by hand, adjusted until the proportions match, and polished to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Patients tell us they chose Pearly Whites because they wanted someone who listens, explains clearly, and doesn’t rush. We’re an independent, family-run practice, which means Dr. Lia can spend as long as needed on your treatment without corporate time pressures or sales targets.

Composite bonding is one of the least invasive cosmetic dental treatments available. In most cases, we don’t need to drill or remove any tooth structure at all. We simply roughen the surface slightly to help the composite stick, then build up the new shape on top of your existing tooth.

This means bonding is completely reversible. If you ever want it removed, we can take the composite off without affecting your natural tooth underneath. This is very different from veneers or crowns, which require permanent removal of enamel.

The bonding process itself doesn’t weaken your teeth. The composite material acts as an additional protective layer, particularly useful if you’ve chipped or worn down edges through grinding.

However, like any dental treatment, bonding does require proper aftercare. If you bite down hard on something like ice, hard sweets, or nutshells, the composite can chip just like a natural tooth would. If you grind your teeth at night, we’ll recommend a protective guard to prevent damage to both the bonding and your natural teeth.

Composite bonding doesn’t respond to teeth whitening treatments. The resin material is colour-stable, which means whitening gel won’t lighten it.

If you’re considering both whitening and bonding, we always recommend whitening your teeth first, then matching the composite to your newly whitened shade. This way, everything blends perfectly and you won’t end up with bonding that looks darker than your natural teeth.

If you’ve already had bonding done and your natural teeth have darkened over time, whitening can brighten the surrounding teeth, but the bonded areas will stay the same colour. In this situation, you have two options: accept the slight shade difference, or have the bonding replaced and matched to your newly whitened teeth.

Most composite bonding treatments don’t require any anaesthetic. Because we’re not usually drilling into the tooth, there’s no pain during the procedure. You’ll feel the dentist working on your tooth, but it should be completely comfortable.

Some patients find the polishing stage slightly sensitive, particularly if we’re working near the gum line, but this passes quickly and isn’t painful.

If we need to remove old fillings or reshape a tooth significantly before bonding, we may use local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable. We’ll always explain what we’re doing and check you’re happy before we start.

Looking after composite bonding is straightforward. Most of the care is identical to looking after natural teeth, with a few small adjustments.

Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Bonded teeth don’t need special toothpaste, but avoid anything too abrasive, as this can scratch the composite surface over time.

Floss daily around bonded teeth just as you would with natural teeth. The bonding doesn’t affect your ability to floss, and keeping the gum line clean helps prevent staining.

Attend regular hygiene appointments every six months. Your hygienist will professionally clean and polish your bonded teeth, removing surface stains and keeping everything looking fresh.

Avoid biting hard objects directly with bonded teeth. This includes ice, hard sweets, pen lids, and fingernails. Composite is strong but can chip under excessive force, just like natural teeth.

Composite bonding can create the appearance of straighter teeth without orthodontics, but it doesn’t actually move your teeth into better positions.

If your teeth are slightly rotated, uneven in length, or have small alignment issues, bonding can reshape the edges to create a more uniform, straighter-looking smile. This works particularly well for minor cosmetic concerns where you want a quick improvement without months of braces or aligners.

However, bonding has limits. If your teeth are significantly crooked, overlapping, or misaligned, orthodontic treatment (like Invisalign) will give you a better, longer-lasting result. Moving teeth into the correct position improves both appearance and function, whereas bonding only addresses the cosmetic side.
