What is a bridge?

Bridging the gap

A bridge replaces a missing tooth with a false tooth (called a pontic) that’s held in place by the teeth next to the gap. Most often, those teeth are fitted with crowns, joined to the false tooth, so the whole bridge is fixed in place in one piece.

Each tooth in the bridge, whether a crown or a false tooth, is called a unit. So a bridge replacing one missing tooth, supported by a crown either side, is a three-unit bridge. Once it’s fitted, it looks and feels like your own teeth, and you brush it like them too.

Types of bridge

The right bridge for the gap

Conventional bridge

The false tooth is held by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Strong and long-lasting, and ideal when those teeth already have large fillings or crowns.

Cantilever bridge

The false tooth is supported from one side only, so only one neighbouring tooth needs a crown.

Adhesive (Maryland) bridge

The false tooth has a thin wing that’s bonded to the back of a neighbouring tooth, so little or no drilling is needed. Often used for front teeth.

Implant bridge

For several missing teeth in a row, a bridge can be fixed onto dental implants instead of your own teeth.

Made by Corus Tusk

Handcrafted in Marylebone

Every bridge is made by Corus Tusk, a leading cosmetic and restorative laboratory in Marylebone, whose ceramists handcraft each one and shade-match it to your teeth, so it blends in with your smile.

We usually recommend e.max, a glass ceramic that lets light through like natural enamel, for front and visible teeth, and zirconia, which is exceptionally strong, for back teeth.

Is a bridge right for me?

When a bridge is a good choice

Your neighbouring teeth need crowns anyway

If the teeth either side of the gap are heavily filled or already crowned, a bridge protects them and replaces the missing tooth at the same time.

Crowns →

You’d rather avoid surgery

A bridge needs no surgery and no healing time, so it’s a good option if an implant isn’t for you.

You want it done quickly

Your bridge is usually fitted about two weeks after your teeth are prepared, rather than the months an implant can take.

An implant isn’t suitable

For example, if there isn’t enough bone for an implant and you’d prefer not to have a bone graft.

Your treatment

Your bridge, step by step

  1. Consultation

We examine the gap and the teeth around it, take X-rays and talk you through a bridge, an implant and a denture, with the costs of each.

  2. Preparation

We numb the supporting teeth and gently shape them, then take a 3D scan.

  3. Your temporary bridge

We fit a temporary bridge, so you’re never without a tooth while yours is made.

  4. Made by Corus Tusk

Their ceramists handcraft your bridge, shade-matched to your teeth, usually within two weeks.

  5. Fitting

We cement your bridge in place, check your bite and show you how to clean underneath it.

Looking after your bridge

Keeping your bridge healthy

Clean underneath

Food can collect under the false tooth, so clean there every day with a floss threader, special floss or small interdental brushes. We’ll show you how.

Brush twice a day

Brush your bridge like your natural teeth, paying attention to where it meets the gum.

Regular hygiene visits

Your hygienist keeps the gums around your bridge healthy and cleans where you can’t reach.

Check-ups

We check your bridge and the teeth supporting it, so any problem is caught early.

Questions

Dental bridge FAQs

How much does a dental bridge cost?

Bridges are from £1,050 per unit. A three-unit bridge, replacing one tooth with a crown either side, is from £3,150, or from £262.50 a month with 0% finance. PearlyPlan members save 10%.

What is a unit?

Each tooth in the bridge, whether a crown on a supporting tooth or a false tooth, is one unit.

Is a bridge or an implant better?

An implant leaves your neighbouring teeth untouched and is usually the most natural replacement. A bridge needs no surgery and is quicker, and is a good choice when the teeth either side already need crowns. We’ll talk you through both honestly.

Who makes your bridges?

Corus Tusk, a leading cosmetic and restorative laboratory in Marylebone, whose ceramists handcraft every bridge.

How long does it take?

Two visits, about two weeks apart. You’ll have a temporary bridge in between.

Does it hurt?

We numb the teeth before we prepare them, so you shouldn’t feel pain. They may feel a little sensitive for a few days afterwards.

How long do bridges last?

Usually 10 to 15 years or more with good care and regular check-ups.

How do I clean under a bridge?

With a floss threader, special floss or small interdental brushes, every day. We’ll show you how at your fitting.

Can a bridge replace more than one tooth?

Yes, depending on the size of the gap and the strength of the supporting teeth. For longer gaps, a bridge fixed on implants may be better.

What if I don’t replace a missing tooth?

The teeth either side can drift or tip into the gap, and the tooth opposite can over-erupt, which can affect your bite and make the teeth harder to clean.

Ready to fill the gap?

Book a consultation, and we’ll talk you through a bridge, an implant and a denture, so you can choose what’s right for you.
