Dental emergencies
What counts as a dental emergency?
If you’re not sure whether it’s urgent, call us on 020 7381 4455 and ask. We’d always rather hear from you.
Severe toothache
Pain that keeps you awake, gets worse or doesn’t ease with painkillers can mean decay, infection or an inflamed nerve.
Swelling
Swelling of the face or gums often means an abscess or infection, which needs treating before it spreads.
Broken or chipped teeth
A cracked or broken tooth can be sharp, sensitive and open to infection. Repairing it early gives it the best chance.
Knocked-out tooth
Act fast: the sooner an adult tooth is put back, the better its chance of surviving. See what to do below, and call us straight away.
Lost filling or crown
The tooth underneath is exposed and can be sensitive or break further. Keep the crown if you have it.
Bleeding or injury
Bleeding that won’t stop, or an injury to your teeth, gums or mouth, should be checked promptly.
When we’re closed

When we’re closed
You can still book online and see our availability for the next appointment, subject to availability. For urgent advice in the meantime, call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk.
Go to A&E or call 999 if
Swelling is making it hard to breathe, swallow or open your eyes, bleeding from your mouth won’t stop, or you’ve had a serious injury to your face or head.
Your appointment
What happens at an emergency appointment
Call or book online
Call us on 020 7381 4455 or book online. We’ll find you an appointment the same or the next working day.
Assessment and X-rays
Your dentist examines the problem and takes any routine X-rays needed to find the cause.
Relief first
We explain what’s wrong and the options, and the cost of any treatment before we start. The priority is getting you comfortable, whether that’s a temporary filling, a dressing, an extraction or a prescription.
Next steps
Emergency care often stabilises the problem first. If you need more treatment, such as a root canal or a crown, we’ll plan it with you once you’re out of pain.

Until you’re seen
What to do right now
These won’t fix the problem, but they can help until your appointment.
Toothache
Take over-the-counter painkillers as directed on the pack, avoid chewing on that side, and rinse gently with warm salt water.
Swelling
Hold a cold compress against your cheek, and don’t use heat, which can make an infection worse. If swelling spreads or affects your breathing or swallowing, go to A&E.
Knocked-out tooth
Hold it by the crown, not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly in milk (not water) without scrubbing, and push it back into the socket if you can. If not, keep it in milk, or in your cheek, and call us straight away. Don’t put a baby tooth back.
Broken tooth or lost filling
Keep any pieces, or the crown, and bring them with you. Temporary filling material from a pharmacy can cover a sharp edge or a hole until you’re seen.
Children
Emergency dental care for children
Children’s teeth get chipped, knocked and sore too, and we see children for emergencies as well as adults. Our team is used to calming worried children (and parents) and explaining things in a way they understand.
Call us and we’ll find the earliest appointment for your child, whether or not they’re registered with us.

Questions
Emergency dentist FAQs
How quickly can I be seen?
We see emergencies the same or the next working day. Call us on 020 7381 4455 or book online, and we’ll find you the earliest appointment we can.
How much is an emergency appointment?
An emergency appointment is £99. It includes the examination and diagnosis, routine X-rays and a prescription if you need one. Any treatment on the day is quoted before we start.
I’m not registered with you. Can I still be seen?
Yes. You don’t need to be a patient of ours to book an emergency appointment.
What should I do if you’re closed?
You can still book online for the next available appointment. For urgent advice in the meantime, call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk. If swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing, or bleeding won’t stop, go to A&E or call 999.
Are you open in the evenings?
Yes, we have early morning and evening appointments available. We’re open Monday to Friday and closed at weekends, when you can still book online for the next available appointment.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
Hold it by the crown, not the root, rinse it briefly in milk (not water) if it’s dirty, and push it back into the socket if you can. If not, keep it in milk or in your cheek and call us straight away: the sooner it’s put back, the better its chances. Don’t put a baby tooth back.
Do you see children in an emergency?
Yes. We see children for emergencies as well as adults, whether or not they’re registered with us.
Will one appointment fix the problem?
Sometimes. Often the first appointment gets you out of pain and stabilises the problem, for example with a temporary filling or a dressing, and we plan any further treatment with you afterwards.
Can I claim an emergency appointment on my insurance?
Usually, yes: many dental insurance policies and health cash plans cover emergency appointments. You pay us and claim it back, and we give you an itemised receipt.
