White spots

Why white spots appear

White spots are areas where the enamel is weaker and more porous than the rest of the tooth. They look chalky because they reflect light differently from healthy enamel.

They’re often left behind after braces, where plaque sat around the brackets, and can also come from early decay, too much fluoride while the teeth were forming (fluorosis), a knock to a baby tooth, or a developmental condition called molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH).

How it works

Fading white spots without a drill

ICON is a resin infiltration treatment. Instead of drilling the mark away and filling it, it fills the tiny pores in the weakened enamel from within.

1. Opening the surface

A gentle gel opens the surface of the white spot, so the resin can get in.

2. Filling the pores

A very runny resin soaks deep into the porous enamel, filling it from the inside.

3. Blending in

Set hard with a light, the resin reflects light like healthy enamel, so the white spot fades into the rest of your tooth.

Who it’s for

Is ICON right for me?

White spots after braces

One of the most common reasons for ICON, and often where it works best.

Early decay

White spots from early decay. ICON also seals the enamel, which helps stop the decay progressing.

Fluorosis

White flecks or patches from too much fluoride while the teeth were forming.

MIH and injury

Marks from molar incisor hypomineralisation or an old injury. Results vary more with these, and we’ll be honest about what to expect.

DMG

The story behind ICON

A family business from Hamburg

ICON is made by DMG, founded in Hamburg in 1963 by Ernst Mühlbauer. It’s still a family business today, run by his son, Dr Wolfgang Mühlbauer, who was born on the very day his father founded the company.

ICON was developed with scientists at the Charité in Berlin and the University of Kiel, as the first way to treat early decay without drilling, and it has since become a trusted way to treat white spots while keeping all of the natural tooth.

Your appointment

What happens during ICON treatment

  1. Consultation

We look at your white spots, explain whether ICON is likely to help and what result to expect, and talk through any alternatives.

  2. Protecting your gums

We place a thin rubber sheet around the teeth being treated, to keep them dry and protect your gums.

  3. Preparing the enamel

A gentle gel opens the surface of the white spot, and a drying liquid shows us how the result is likely to look.

  4. Infiltration

We apply the ICON resin, let it soak in and set it hard with a light, repeating if needed.

  5. Polishing

We polish the teeth smooth, and you can see the difference straight away.

Questions

ICON white spot FAQs

What is ICON?

A resin infiltration treatment for white spots on the teeth. A very runny resin fills the weakened enamel from within, so the white spot fades into the rest of the tooth, with no drilling.

How much does ICON cost?

From £295 per tooth. PearlyPlan members save 10%.

Does it hurt?

No. There’s no drilling and no injection.

How many visits will I need?

Usually just one.

Will my white spots disappear completely?

Often, especially white spots after braces or from early decay. Marks from fluorosis, MIH or injury vary more. We’ll tell you honestly what to expect at your consultation.

How long does it last?

ICON is a long-lasting treatment, as the resin sits inside the enamel rather than on top of it.

Can I whiten my teeth too?

Yes. We usually whiten first, so we can match the result to your new shade.

Is any of my tooth removed?

No. Unlike a filling or bonding, ICON fills the pores in the weakened enamel, so nothing is drilled away.

What if ICON doesn’t fully work?

For deeper marks, a thin layer of composite bonding on top can finish the job.

Ready to lose the white spots?

Book a consultation, and we’ll check whether ICON is right for your teeth.
