Straumann Roxolid
Implants from the world leader
We use Straumann, the world’s leading dental implant company, whose implants are among the most researched and trusted anywhere.
Our Roxolid implants are made from a titanium-zirconium alloy that’s stronger than pure titanium. That strength means a narrower implant can sometimes be used, which can avoid the need for a bone graft. They’re finished with Straumann’s SLActive surface, designed to help your bone bond to the implant quickly and reliably.

Your implant dentist
Dr Rohan Shaffery
Implants at Pearly Whites are placed and restored by Dr Rohan Shaffery, who has a special interest in oral surgery, implantology and periodontology. After graduating from King’s College London, he completed a Master’s in Clinical Implantology at the University of Central Lancashire and became a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He has trained with leading clinicians including Dr Basil Mizrahi and Dr Ian Dunn, and is a member of the International Team for Implantology, the Association of Dental Implantology and the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. Because he both places your implant and fits your new tooth, you see the same dentist from start to finish.

Why implants
The benefits of dental implants
They protect your jawbone
When a tooth is lost, the bone that held it starts to shrink. An implant takes the place of the root and passes the forces of chewing into the bone, which helps keep it healthy.
Proven to last
In a large 10-year study of Straumann implants, 98.8% were still in place after ten years. With good care, implants can last for decades.
Eat what you love
An implant is fixed in your jaw like a natural tooth, so you can bite into an apple or chew a steak with confidence, which is often difficult, if not impossible, with a denture.
They protect your other teeth
A gap lets neighbouring teeth tilt and drift, and puts extra wear on the teeth that are left, putting you at risk of losing more teeth. Filling it with an implant helps protect the teeth you have.
Nothing to take out
No plates, clasps or adhesive, and nothing to slip when you talk or laugh. Your implant looks and feels like your own tooth.
Your other teeth stay untouched
Unlike a traditional bridge, an implant doesn’t need the healthy teeth either side to be shaped to hold it.
What implants can do
Replacing one tooth, several or a full arch
A single tooth
One implant and a crown replace a missing tooth without touching the healthy teeth either side.
Several teeth
Individual implants, or an implant bridge supported by two or more implants, replace several teeth in a row.
A full arch
A full set of fixed teeth on a few implants, often called All-on-X or teeth in a day. For full-arch cases we also use the Inserta implant system.

Your treatment
Your implant journey
Consultation
Dr Rohan examines your mouth, takes X-rays and photos, and talks you through your options. The £75 fee is put towards your treatment.
3D scan and planning
A 3D CT scan at a specialist imaging centre, at a preferred rate for our patients, shows your bone in detail. In some cases we plan your implant digitally and use a surgical guide for precise placement.
Placing your implant
Your implant is placed under local anaesthetic. If you’re nervous, sedation with a visiting anaesthetist can be arranged. In some cases, the implant can go in the same day a tooth is removed.
Healing
Your implant bonds with the bone, usually over 3 to 6 months.
Your new tooth
Dr Rohan fits your crown or bridge, matched to your other teeth.
Aftercare
Regular hygiene visits and check-ups keep your implant and the gum around it healthy for years to come.
Looking after your implant
Clean it just like a natural tooth
An implant can’t decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed if plaque builds up, so keeping it clean is the key to making it last.
Brush twice a day
Brush your implant just as you would your other teeth, paying attention to where it meets the gum.
Clean between
Use interdental brushes or floss every day to clean around your implant, where your toothbrush can’t reach.
Regular hygiene visits
Our hygienists clean around your implant with gentle Guided Biofilm Therapy, which is safe for implants, and check the gum around it.
Dental hygiene →Check-ups
Regular check-ups let Dr Rohan keep an eye on your implant and the bone around it, and spot anything early.
Not enough bone?
Bone grafts and sinus lifts
Bone grafts
If the bone where your tooth used to be has shrunk, a bone graft can rebuild it so an implant can be placed. From £600.
Sinus lifts
For upper back teeth, a sinus lift makes room for an implant where the bone is thin. We’ll quote at your consultation.
Narrower implants
Because Roxolid is so strong, a narrower implant can sometimes be used, which can avoid the need for a graft.

Dental implant FAQs
How much does a dental implant cost?
From £3,295 for a single tooth: £1,995 for the implant and £1,300 for the crown, with 0% finance available. For several teeth, we’ll quote at your consultation. PearlyPlan members save 5%. The implant consultation is £75, put towards your treatment.
Why Straumann?
Straumann is the world’s leading dental implant company. Our Roxolid implants are made from a titanium-zirconium alloy that’s stronger than pure titanium, and they have Straumann’s SLActive surface, designed to help the bone bond quickly.
Who will place my implant?
Dr Rohan Shaffery, who has a Master’s in Clinical Implantology. He places your implant and fits your new tooth, so you see the same dentist throughout.
How long does implant treatment take?
Healing usually takes 3 to 6 months from placing the implant to fitting your new tooth. In some cases, an implant can be placed the same day a tooth is removed.
Does having an implant hurt?
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during treatment, and any soreness afterwards can usually be managed with everyday painkillers. If you’re nervous, sedation with a visiting anaesthetist can be arranged.
Am I suitable for implants?
Most adults with healthy gums and enough jawbone are. Smoking and some medical conditions can affect healing, so Dr Rohan will check your suitability at your consultation.
What if I don’t have enough bone?
A bone graft or sinus lift can often make room for an implant, and because Roxolid is so strong, a narrower implant can sometimes avoid the need for a graft.
Do I need a CT scan?
Usually, yes. A 3D CT scan shows your bone in detail so your implant can be planned precisely. We refer you to a specialist imaging centre, at a preferred rate for Pearly Whites patients.
Can you replace all my teeth?
Yes. Full-arch treatment, often called All-on-X or teeth in a day, gives you a full set of fixed teeth on a few implants.
How long do implants last?
Well maintained, with good cleaning, hygiene visits and check-ups, the implant itself can last for decades: in a large 10-year study of Straumann implants, 98.8% were still in place after ten years. The crown on top usually lasts around 10 to 15 years before it needs replacing, like any crown.
Why replace a missing tooth?
A gap lets the teeth around it tilt and drift, puts extra wear on your remaining teeth and lets the bone shrink, which can put you at risk of losing more teeth. An implant fills the gap and helps protect the teeth you have.
How do I look after my implant?
Clean it just like a natural tooth: brush twice a day, clean between your teeth every day, and keep up your hygiene visits and check-ups. Plaque around an implant can inflame the gum and bone, so good cleaning is what makes it last.
