White fillings
Why tooth-coloured fillings
They look like your teeth
Composite is matched to the shade of your tooth, so your filling blends in, with no dark metal showing when you smile or laugh.
They bond to your tooth
Composite bonds to the tooth itself, sealing the edges and helping to support what’s left of it.
They save more tooth
Because composite bonds in place, we only remove the decay. Silver fillings need the cavity shaped to lock them in, which can mean removing healthy tooth.
Eat straight away
Composite is set hard with a blue light before you leave, so you can eat as normal once the numbness has worn off.
White or silver?
Composite and amalgam fillings compared
| Feature | White (composite) fillings | Silver (amalgam) fillings |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Matched to your tooth colour | Dark grey metal |
| How it stays in | Bonds to the tooth | Held in by the shape of the cavity |
| Tooth removed | Usually only the decay | Often some healthy tooth too, to hold the filling in |
| Setting | Set hard with a light, straight away | Takes time to reach full strength |
| Repairs | Easy to repair or add to | Usually replaced |
Old silver fillings
Replacing old silver fillings
Silver fillings can last a long time, but over the years they can crack, leak or let decay back in underneath, and many people would simply rather not see dark metal when they smile.
If an old filling is failing, or you’d like it replaced for the way it looks, we can replace it with a natural-looking white filling or, for a large filling, an onlay. We’ll check its condition with photos and X-rays first and give you honest advice, because replacing a sound filling means removing some tooth too.
Minimally invasive dentistry
Saving as much of your natural tooth as possible
Curodont Repair
For very early decay, Curodont can help the enamel rebuild itself in suitable cases, with no drilling, no injection and no filling.
Curodont Repair →Biodentine lining
For deep decay close to the nerve, a Biodentine lining under your filling helps the tooth protect and repair itself. In clinical studies, around 8 to 9 in 10 teeth treated this way stayed healthy with no need for root canal treatment.
Biodentine →Only the decay
Modern bonded fillings mean we remove the decay and little else, so your tooth stays as strong as possible.
Filling, onlay or crown?
Choosing the right repair for your tooth
A filling is the right choice for most cavities. But once around half or more of a tooth is decayed, missing or already filled, the walls that are left can be thin and prone to cracking under the pressure of biting.
Then an onlay or crown is the better way to protect it. A porcelain onlay covers and strengthens the weakened part of the tooth while keeping the healthy rest of it, and a crown covers the whole tooth. We’ll show you your photos and X-rays and explain why we’re recommending one or the other.
Your appointment
What happens during a filling
Check
We look at the tooth, with photos and an X-ray if needed, and explain what we’ve found and your options.
Numbing
If you need it, we numb the tooth so you’re comfortable. Settle back and choose something to watch on the TV above your chair, with noise-cancelling headphones.
Removing the decay
We remove the decay gently, keeping as much healthy tooth as we can. For deep decay, we add a Biodentine lining to protect the nerve.
Rebuilding
We build the tooth back up in layers of shade-matched composite, setting each one hard with a light.
Finishing
We shape and polish your filling so it feels smooth and natural, and check your bite.
Afterwards
After your filling
Numbness
It usually wears off within a few hours. Until then, take care not to bite your cheek or have very hot drinks.
Eating
Your filling is fully set before you leave, so you can eat normally once the numbness has gone.
Sensitivity
Some sensitivity for a couple of days is normal, and after deeper fillings it can last as long as 2 to 3 weeks. It should settle on its own.
Your bite
If your bite feels high or uneven once the numbness has worn off, call us and we’ll adjust it.

Questions
Dental filling FAQs
How much is a white filling?
White composite fillings are from £225 for a simple filling and from £319 for a complex one. PearlyPlan members save 10%.
Why choose a white filling?
It matches your tooth, bonds to it and usually needs only the decay removed, so more of your natural tooth is kept. It’s also set hard straight away.
Can you replace my old silver fillings?
Yes, if they’re failing or you’d like them replaced for the way they look. We check them first and give you honest advice, as replacing a sound filling also removes some tooth.
What is Biodentine?
A material that behaves like your natural tooth tissue. As a lining under deep fillings, it helps the tooth protect and repair itself, and in clinical studies around 8 to 9 in 10 teeth treated this way stayed healthy with no need for root canal treatment. It’s £175. With a white filling, it’s a fraction of the cost of root canal treatment plus a crown.
What is Curodont Repair?
A treatment for very early decay that can help the enamel rebuild itself in suitable cases, with no drilling or injection. It’s £175 for the first tooth and £125 for each additional tooth.
Do I need a filling or a crown?
Most cavities need a filling. But once around half or more of a tooth is decayed, missing or already filled, an onlay or crown protects it better from cracking. We’ll explain which is right for your tooth.
Can I eat after a filling?
Yes. White fillings are set hard before you leave, so you can eat once the numbness has worn off.
Is it normal for my tooth to be sensitive afterwards?
Yes. Some sensitivity for a couple of days is normal, and in some cases, especially after deeper fillings, it can last as long as 2 to 3 weeks. If it gets worse, lasts longer or your bite feels uneven, call us.
Do you do fillings for children?
Yes. Children under 18 can be seen on the NHS, free of charge, from 10am to 4pm on weekdays.
I’ve lost a filling. What should I do?
Call us and we’ll see you the same or next working day. In the meantime, temporary filling material from a pharmacy can cover the hole.
