The short answer
If your teeth are in the wrong position (crooked, crowded or spaced apart), Invisalign fixes the cause. If they’re in the right place but chipped, worn or uneven, composite bonding may be all you need. Often the best result is Invisalign first, then bonding to perfect the edges.
Why people compare them
Many people come to us knowing they want a better smile but not how to get there. They’ve noticed crooked teeth in photos, a small gap, or uneven edges, and they want a natural result, not an obvious one.
Search online and Invisalign and composite bonding come up side by side. But they do very different things, and choosing the wrong one can mean a disappointing result or more treatment later.
What Invisalign does
Invisalign is orthodontic treatment. A series of clear, removable aligners gradually moves your teeth into a better position. It changes where your teeth sit, not their shape or colour. It’s used to:
- Straighten crowded or crooked teeth
- Close gaps by moving teeth together
- Improve how your teeth bite together
- Correct teeth that have moved over time, for example after braces as a teenager
What composite bonding does
Composite bonding is cosmetic treatment. Tooth-coloured composite is added to your teeth and sculpted by hand, usually in one visit and with minimal preparation. It changes the shape and look of your teeth, but doesn’t move them. It’s used to:
- Repair chips and worn edges
- Close small gaps
- Improve the shape and symmetry of teeth
- Even out uneven edges
Side by side

When Invisalign is the better choice
- Crooked or crowded teeth: bonding can make slightly uneven teeth look straighter, but it can’t move them. Building out crooked teeth to disguise them often makes them look bulky.
- Gaps caused by tooth position: if your teeth are spaced apart, Invisalign closes the gaps properly rather than masking them.
- Bite problems: bonding doesn’t change how your teeth meet. Invisalign can.
When bonding is the better choice
- Chipped teeth: bonding is often the simplest, most conservative repair.
- Uneven edges: bonding can level them without orthodontics.
- Small changes to shape: if your teeth are straight but not quite balanced, bonding works well.
Can you have both?
Yes, and it’s often the best approach. Straightening your teeth first means bonding only needs to refine the shape and edges, so less composite is needed, on fewer teeth, and the result looks more natural and lasts longer.
Whitening fits in too. Composite doesn’t whiten, so if you’d like a brighter smile we whiten first (Invisalign for adults includes whitening gels) and then match your bonding to your new shade.
What about cost?
Bonding costs less upfront: edge bonding is from £339 per tooth, and composite veneers from £395. Invisalign for adults is £2,995–£4,450 for both arches, including whitening gels and retainers, and you can spread the cost with 0% finance over 12 months.
But choosing bonding when your teeth really need straightening can mean more composite, more repairs and a less natural result. The right treatment is the one that solves the problem properly.
How we help you decide
We start with one simple question: are your teeth in the right position? If not, Invisalign is usually the foundation. If they are, bonding may be enough. Sometimes the answer is both.
We look at the position of your teeth, your bite, your gums and what you’d like to achieve, then explain your options clearly, with no pressure. Book a free Invisalign consultation, including a 3D scan and a preview of your new smile, or a £50 smile makeover consultation, put towards your treatment if you go ahead.
